Let the school year begin!!!!

Today marks the first day of our 2018-2019 school year.  I am extremely excited about my curriculum choices for the year.  We will be using Easy Peasy, a free all in one online homeschool program!  I love what I see so far and the fact that it's free makes me even happier!  Joie will be doing 12th grade and Jayden 7th.  I can't believe Joie is in 12th grade!!!!  I was really nervous about teaching her for her last year of highschool, but not anymore.  I am fully confident that she will graduate with all the knowledge she needs to carry on to college.

Instead of using Easy Peasy for math I am having Jayden use Life with Fred.  I think he will respond well to the fun stories in the program.  Check out some sample pages here.   Joie is using Math-U-See for pre-calculus.  She learned and retained so much last year in Algebra 2 with Math-U-See that I figured there was no sense in changing the curriculum this year.    We both appreciate the Video lessons that come with the complete curriculum; it allows me to have more time.  If she doesn't understand the material after the video then I step in to help, but honestly, I only had to do it once on material she should have learned in her public school Geometry/Algebra1 class the year before.

Both of my children need more grammar lessons.  I am shocked that Joie only learned grammar the years I taught her.  Do public schools not teach it anymore???  Great writing comes from understanding proper sentence structure.  I will be using Fix-It Grammar for both of them.  Again, I am really excited to use this curriculum; I am already anticipating success!

We have found some homeschool groups on St.Thomas, so this year we already have some group activities planned!

May this school year be enriching, fun, and peaceful for us all.

So long public school

After 4 years of public schooling Joie and Jayden will be homeschooled again! Joie will be in 11th grade and Jayden in 6th.

Since we are in the process of moving to St. Thomas our schooling will definitely be quite different than the traditional education plan. In all honesty, I believe for the first few months during/following our move we will be life learners! Unstructured learning at its finest. I believe it will help the smooth the transition from public schooling in Las Vegas to homeschooling on an island in the Caribbean.

Tehatticup Mines

What an awesome field trip!  It is amazing how many neat things are in our backyard.  I never knew a that guided tour for a real gold and silver mine was available just outside Las Vegas.  Just take I-95, heading towards Searchlight, then turn off on NV Hwy 165 (Nelson's Landing and Eldorado Canyon).  Stay on that for about 15-20 minutes until you come to...

Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours

It's a cute little town that was rebuilt by the people that own it now.  When they first purchased the property they were only looking for a couple acres to rent kyacks.  Soon enough they found out that they struck it rich on an old gold/silver mine.  It was soon decided that all the collapsed buildings would be rebuilt and the mine cleaned out for tours.  Walking through the mine was the perfect way to finish off our study of Nevada History.

Piano Time

Joie loves to play the piano.  Though she has never taken any lessons she has been able to learn many songs mostly by ear, but YouTube has been a great help as well.

Her finger clap at the end was a surprise for me and made me chuckle.
Happy homeschooling=)

Celebrating the Traditional Sabbath

November 2, 2012
THE SABBATH
Dressed in Our best for the Friday Evening Meal.  Our cousins, Megan and Daniel, joined us for this informative celebration.  I am not going to go into all the details of this night because I am behind on my blogging.  I am pretty sure blogging is supposed to be done as it happens, but what do you know, Life got in the way and I don't want to skip sharing somethings.  I will tell you that our information about the Jewish feasts cam from the book Celebrating Biblical Feasts In Your Home or Church by Martha Zimmerman
Jayden's Challah Covering

Joie's Challah Covering
I think it's very sweet to see how Jayden's inspiration came from Joie.  This experience was truly remarkable and one we will do again.

P.S.  Make the bread.  It is worth the time.
